Just a 15-20 minute drive away from Palma when arriving in Valldemossa seems like a lifetime away from the glitz and glamour of the city. Perched in the Tramuntana Mountains Valldemossa is named after its original Moorish landowner Muza. This quaint car free town is blessed with cobbled streets, stone houses, beautiful landscapes and charming architecture.
The Royal Charterhouse of Valldemossa is a historic Monestary dating back to the 14th Century. Passed visitors to have stayed in the Monestary include Frederic Chopin and George Sand. They stayed in the Winter of 1838-1839. Valldemossa influenced some of Chopin's compositions. . Part of the monastery is King Sancho's Place – later gifted to Carthusian monks, who converted it and other buildings into the monastery. It probably has more visitors than any other building in Mallorca apart from La Seu in Palma.
Valldemossa is full of art galleries, museums and shops selling local crafts. There are various cultural events throughout the year.
In Valldemossa you will find traditional Mallorcan food including local specialities and Ensaimadas.
The famous American actor founded Costa Nord in 2000. This offers a taste of Mallorcan history, traditions and gastronomy. The Michael Douglas Tour is held daily from 0900-1700 and is 8€ entry, children under 12 are free. The actor appreciated the area so much he lived in the grand S’Estaca near Deia.
Situated above Valldemossa is the impressive Puig de Teix, this is the most visited peak of the Tramuntana Mountain range. Hikers start at the towns bus stop and trek 16km through the Son Marroig Estate to the 1064m summit. At the top the hike is well worth it for the staggering views. The walk back down leads you back to the bus stop and takes around 4.5 hours to complete.
One of the main pulls of the town are the traditional cobbled stone streets, They are adorned with shops, boutiques and eateries. Valldemossa's famous biscuits Cocas de Potatas are available in every bakery. The local Market happens on Sundays. Here you will find stalls with local produce including fresh fruit, vegetables, cheeses and Mallorcan hams.
If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the main beaches in Mallorca, you will find secluded bays and beaches not far from Valldemossa. Follow the signs for Port de Valldemossa and travel the 6km until you reach the harbour with its pebble beach and the Cala Sa Marina restaurant.
