Deia

Deia

Deia is a village on the North West side of the Island. Similar to other villages is picturesque and known for having stunning scenery. Deia is perched on the cliffs of Tramuntana Mountain and has sea views, lush landscapes, olive groves and hillside terraces in the surrounding areas. For this reason Hiking is a very popular activity.

Artists

Deia has a long history of attracting artists in-particular the British poet, novelist and author of 'I Claudius' Robert Graves who lived in Deia for many years. Graves's home has been turned into a museum so visitors can learn more about the authors life and works.

Also author Helen Walsh was inspired to write and set her 2014 book The Lemon Grove in Deia.

There are a variety of restaurants providing local and international cuisine all using fresh local produce. Cafe Sa Fonda is popular with the locals, it is a simple bar with impromptu live music occasionally!

History

Deia had three Roman Catholic monasteries constructed in the area.

Belmond Residencia was owned by Richard Branson, famous guests such as Princess Diana and Robbie Williams stayed there. Here you can now enjoy a fabulous Afternoon Tea at the in house restaurant Miro.

Hiking

There are plenty of hiking routes in the area. One of the most popular being Sa Foradada, this is a picturesque peninsula with splendid views. Some people combine the route with the house of Son Marroig. This is a traditional Mallorcan Estate and the former residency of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria. The house has now been turned into a Museum paying tribute to the Archduke. Beautiful gardens and views which will take your breath away especially at Sunset. The entry fee is 4€ per person.

Beaches

A thirty minute walk from the village will lead you to Cala Deia, this is a small cove with a shingle beach and 2 restaurants known for their sea food. Deia's other beach is Llucalri this is 2 miles from the villas and is only accessible by foot/boat. Natural mud baths can be found here, it is also know as a naturists spot!
